Scientists and researchers, to this point in history, have not been able to determine the causes of fibromyalgia. Current research seems to indicate people afflicted with this medical condition, in fact, deal with pain differently in the mind.

These individuals also tend to sleep for longer periods of time but, in fact, get a very poor quality of rest. Researchers conducting current studies also found people with this medical condition that were not allowed to get to stage 4 sleep developed symptoms of this ailment.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

If you have chronic pain in the ligaments and muscles, you could in fact have this medical condition. You might experience pain in the muscles and ligaments of the neck, back, shoulders and hips in the early part of the day more intensely. If the pain you experience feels like the flu, burns, throbs, aches, or feels like a sharp stabbing pain, you should probably consult a doctor to be safe.

Do you often experience fatigue while doing common activities during the day? Is the tiredness you feel often makes it hard to complete your job on a daily basis and sleeping or resting does not help? You should probably contact a doctor to have him run a few tests.

Do you often find it hard to concentrate on simple tasks during daytime? Doctors refer to this difficulty to keep focus as fibrofog. If you have recurring loss of memory and constantly feel depressed, fibromyalgia could be the reason.

What can you do to help relieve the symptoms of this medical condition? By taking the time to follow a few simple ideas, you can actually reduce some of the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. The most important thing you can do is start a regular regiment of low impact exercise.

This helps keep your muscles in working condition and healthy and might help to relieve some of the pain you feel. Start a program of regular walking, swimming, water aerobics or biking, instead of lifting weights. This should reduce the tenderness you experience, maybe even give you more energy during the day, and might help you get more sleep.

You could start doing Pilates to help reduce the symptoms you feel. This type of stretching exercise works well when combined with heat and massage. You could achieve a significant reduction in the symptoms you experience using this therapy.

Currently, there are also three drugs the FDA has approved for the treatment of fibromyalgia – Lyrica, Cymbalta and Savella. Lyrica is an anti seizure medication, while Cymbalta and Savella are anti depressants. Current research indicates these three drugs can in fact reduce the level of pain you experience due to your medical condition.

There are other treatments people with fibromyalgia are taking to relieve their symptoms. These include the muscle relaxant Flexeril, a drug used to treat Parkinson’s disease called Mirapex, and even low doses of antidepressant medications.

Some people afflicted with this medical condition have also reduced their symptoms using biofeedback and relaxation techniques. Acupuncture has also been shown to reduce the tenderness people experience in muscles and ligaments, while steroid or lidocaine injections directly into an area where pain is felt may provide you some temporary relief.

Presently there is no cure for your fibromyalgia, but doctors, scientists, researchers, and individuals with this medical condition are hopeful a cure will one day be found.

If you adopt a healthy lifestyle, make sure you get the rest you need to function, and maintain a positive attitude toward life and your condition. You should be able to learn to deal with this medical condition and live life to the fullest.
